Brief:

Work in a team to design a product through to manufacturing for an outdoor shop in 4 weeks.

“Crib Goch Outdoor is an independent outdoor clothing and equipment shop found in LLanberis and Beddgelert, in the heart of Snowdonia. Established in 2002 by Dylan Jones, a keen hiker who you'll find working at the Llanberis store, the original and largest of the two outdoor shops.”

Result:

An ultra-lightweight walking pole aimed at competitive runners with an innovative stowing mechanism.

Process:

Client interviews, user experience trips and market analysis.

Ideating and iterating with 3D printing to create functional prototypes.

Prototype testing at the UTS running event and customer impressions.

Final adjustments and presentation with full manufacturing spec.

A fantastic day out to Stoke-on-Trent to conduct some market research from the new and take inspiration from the old!

If you can't afford it, build it yourself! A long time coming aluminium upgrade for the 3D printer Y-Carriage to eliminate the acrylics deflection and reduce movement resonance. 1st attempt cut on the Roland CNC before the bit overheated and welded itself to the stock. ❌ 2nd attempt completed on the Haas CNC mill using all but 6mm of the total machinable volume ✅
